Yoga Etiquette
Arrive early
Try to arrive 10 - 15 minutes early. Sign in, make payment and find your spot. Tardiness can be disruptive and disrespectful to the teacher and other students. If you are late, please enter the room as quietly as a mouse and at a time that is not so disruptive.
Talk to the teacher
If you have any injuries (past or current), concerns or contraindications, talk to the teacher before class.. Speak up if something doesn’t feel right. if you have lots of concerns, speak after class or consider scheduling a private session.
Keep your belongings outside class
Floor space can be limited, so keep your “footprint” small. Limit the belongings near your mat to the bare essentials: a water bottle, towel, and maybe an additional layer for the relaxation period at the end of class. Leave your coat, purse, keys, cell phone (turned off) in the designated area outside the classroom. No cell phones in the yoga studio!
Remove your shoes
The studio stays most hygienic if everyone leaves their shoes outside the classroom. This tradition goes back thousands of years, and continues today. Removing your shoes is not only respectful, it strengthens the arches of the feet, improves balance and sensation, and helps you tune into your emotional being. If hygiene is an issue, wear your socks into the room and remove them once you are on your mat. Please do not walk on other students’ mats
Relish the quiet
A yoga classroom is like a sanctuary—people come here to relax and find peace. Honor this by observing as much quiet as possible: Try not to make distracting sounds and save any chit-chat for after class. Once you enter the yoga space, it is time to observe silence. If you must speak, please do so in a soft whisper.
Excuse yourself quietly
If you must use the restroom during class, it’s most polite to wait until a short period of rest like child’s pose or between asana
Consider hygiene
Apply the yogic principle of saucha, which means "cleanliness" or "purity" If you sweat a lot, please wipe up any excess sweat around your mat. If you borrow a mat, please wipe it down with the cleaner provided.
Skip the scents
Many people have sensitivities to perfumes and scented body lotions; help us keep our studios fragrance-free by avoiding applying any aromatic products before class.
Put your Props away
If you’ve used blocks place them back the way you found them. Fold your blanket: don’t just drop it in a heap. If you borrowed a mat from the studio, wipe it down before replacing it
Wear appropriate clothing
Avoid jeans
Respect your teacher
Respecting your yoga teacher comes in many forms. The easiest one is following the poses or a modified version of them. Do not do your own series in the middle of a guided class if you are bored or uninterested in the current pose. Finish the class and choose another teacher but during the class, respect the teacher enough to follow instructions and do so with an open mind. Ask questions mindfully.
Respect other students
Be aware of the space and where you’re placing your mat so you don’t sit yourself directly in front of someone else. It is common courtesy to stagger mats so that the person behind you has a clear view of the teacher. If the studio is full, make room for other students!
Stay ‘til the end
Savasana is a period of relaxation at the end of each yoga class. If you roll up your mat and dash out the door during this quiet time, you’re not only annoying your fellow students, you’re missing out on what is arguably the most essential part of the practice. Forget about the to-do list that awaits you after class, and allow yourself to really sink in to this incredibly restoring pose. Breathe and remind yourself this is why you’re here.
